Please send us your email address if you plan to attend and are not a regular attendee for whom we already have an email address. For all outings, as well as your binoculars, bring food (at least morning tea and, depending on the day’s event, lunch), plenty to drink, sunscreen, hat, and wear sturdy shoes suitable for the bush. Often insect repellent is useful. Whenever possible, please contact the organisers beforehand to let them know you might be coming, and please notify them of any medical issues you might have that could have an effect on you during the course of the outing.

Platypus Park, Goonellabah and Lismore Botanic Gardens
Platypus Park is situated not far off the B60/Bruxner Highway at Goonellabah. From Lismore, take the Bruxner Highway towards Ballina and turn RIGHT into Holland Street at the roundabout just after the Northern Star office. From the Ballina direction, Holland Street is a LEFT turn at the roundabout by the IGA & Chemist Warehouse small shopping centre.
For people travelling from northern areas there are several cross-country routes to get to the Bruxner Highway, but an easy one is to take the B62 for Bangalow off the M1/Freeway (beware of changed traffic conditions at Byron/Bangalow turnoff/roundabout or you will end up going to Ballina! Make sure you go right round the roundabout to the Bangalow exit.) and travel on the B62 via Bangalow, Clunes and on towards Lismore. Soon after driving through Bexhill, and immediately after crossing the Wilson’s River, turn LEFT into Boatharbour Road for Eltham and Richmond Hill then immediately RIGHT into Richmond Hill Road. Drive to the end of Richmond Hill Road and turn RIGHT onto the Bruxner Highway (B60) then LEFT into Holland Street at the roundabout by the IGA/Chemist Warehouse shopping centre.
Drive along Holland Street until you see Carson Street on the LEFT and park outside Hepburn Park (a playing field), on the RIGHT, just after Carson Street. We will meet at the parking spot. There is a short walk down some shallow steps to Platypus Park where there is a pond, and a boardwalk and some woodland to walk round/through. We may be lucky enough to see a Platypus. Please note no facilities here.
We will then drive to the Lismore Botanic Gardens on Wyrallah Road. From Platypus Park drive back to the Bruxner Highway and turn LEFT for Lismore. Continue through 4 roundabouts and some traffic lights and at the 5th roundabout, turn LEFT onto Wyrallah Road. Continue driving on Wyrallah Road until the houses thin out and a Council Depot is seen on the RIGHT. Soon after this there will be a sign, on the RIGHT, for the Lismore Recycling and Recovery Centre (the Tip!) – turn RIGHT here and the road leading to the Botanic Gardens is a right fork in the mouth of this entrance. Drive a short way until you see a parking area, under some trees, on the RIGHT. There are facilities here.

Cruise Terranora Inlet and Walk The Terranora Broadwater
BirdLife Northern Rivers will be chartering the “Catch a Crab” tour boat for a cruise around the Terranora Broadwater. See our outing list below for date, time, and location (or http://www.birdlife.org.au/group-events/birdlife-northern-nsw/). The cost will be $20 per person to be paid in advance. Pay at our February outing, mail to Laurel Allsopp, 9 Terranora Parade Bilambil Heights NSW 2486, or give to Wendy McFadden if out with the Brunswick Valley Birdwatchers. It is a great location for raptors, kingfishers, and perhaps Mangrove Honeyeaters. The bird list for this area is 170+ species. Tea and biscuits will be provided on the cruise and afterwards we will take a walk along the path around the Broadwater. There will be a meeting after the walk so bring your lunch, chairs and general items for an outing.
If you mail payment to Laurel please email her also at firstname.lastname@example.org in case your payment is delayed. Cheques should be made out to Tweed Bird Observers.
Please arrive by 7:30 am as the cruise departs at 08.00 DST from the Catch a Crab wharf at Birds Bay Drive, just behind Seagulls Club in Gollan Drive, Tweed Heads West. The cruise will be for 2 hours around the Terranora Inlet, and at about 10.00 am we will do a bird walk around the Broadwater. The walk will probably take 2 hours or so, after which we can have our lunch and the meeting either in the grounds of Seagulls or at the museum, a short drive away. Tea and biscuits will be provided on the cruise.
From the M1 take the Kennedy Drive exit, proceed for about 3km, cross the bridge into Gollan Drive and follow along to Seagulls Club. Parking is available at the back of the club, in the far right corner of the car park. There is a short walk to where we will catch the boat.
Seating is limited please contact Linda Brannian at 040 833 888 or email@example.com if you have not paid in person at an earlier outing and wish to attend.

Rummery Park, Nightcap National Park
From Repentance Creek Road turn into Upper Coopers Creek Road which later becomes Minyon Falls Road. Continue along this road, passing the Minyon Grass picnic area turning on the LEFT, until the Minyon Falls parking and picninc area is reached – park on the LEFT and we will meet here then decide on a loop walk to Rummery Park camping area and return, or other directions as preferred on the day. There are toilets and some picnic tables.
Sunday 15 May 2016, 7:30 am (no meet Sunday 8th/Mother’s Day) West Byron Wetlands (STP), off Bayshore Drive, Byron Bay (Survey with BBB)
West Byron Wetlands are situated on an unnamed side road off Bayshore Drive
For people travelling from northern areas, drive south on the Pacific Highway to the Byron Bay / Ewingsdale Road exit. Travel along Ewingsdale Road until just past the Sports Centre then take the next Left, at the BP Service Station, into Bayshore Drive. Travel along Bayshore Drive, past an IGA shopping Centre on the Right, and turn Left immediately after a new development (opposite Bayshore Lane). You will see a yellow and green, semi-circular sign on the corner, saying ‘Integrated Water Management Reserve’. Drive to the end of this road and wait by the gate.
For people travelling from the Ballina/southerly direction, check the best way to access Ewingsdale Road – currently this is by turning off the Pacific Highway/motorway at Bangalow – flashing electronic signs advise taking this exit for Byron. This exit will take you to a roundabout – take the 3rd exit onto the Hinterland Way north (old Pacific Highway) and there are signs further along for Byron – navigating round 2 roundabouts to get onto Ewingsdale Road. People travelling from the west will also take this route from the Bangalow roundabout on the B62, Lismore to Bangalow road which joins the Hinterland Way north of Bangalow. N.B., by the time of this outing, direct access to Ewingsdale Road from the Pacific Highway, travelling north, may well be open, thus cancelling the need to go via the Hinterland Way. Before the outing, please check the BirdLife Northern Rivers website for any changes in directions to access the Ewingsdale Road: http://birdlife.org.au/group-events/birdlife-northern-nsw/
All walks are on flat tracks and there are facilities available. Scopes are useful here. Please be prompt if you don’t have your own electronic key access to the site.

Vallances Road STP, Mullumbimby (Survey with BBB)
Vallances Road is a turning off Coolamon Scenic Drive, just north of Mullumbimby. Coolamon Scenic Drive can be accessed from Billinudgel by turning south (take Brunswick Valley Way, not the Pacific Motorway) then turn Left onto Vallances Road at a tight bend, or from Mullumbimby by driving through the town on Murwillumbah Road and turning Right onto Coolamon Scenic Drive. Vallances Road is on the Right on a tight/blind bend, so turn with care, drive to the end of the sealed road and meet at the Sewage Treatment Works gate before driving into the site. If you are late, come through 2 gates to parking area. Byron Council requests that all gates are to be Left as found.
N.B. There are no facilities here and mosquitoes may be a problem.
