Please note that BirdLife Northern Rivers is a local branch of BirdLife Northern NSW. Beginning in 2015 outings for BirdLife Northern Rivers will be posted at:

http://www.birdlife.org.au/group-events/birdlife-northern-nsw/

If bad weather threatens an outing, a decision as to whether or not to cancel will be based on weather predictions on the BOM web site. Any cancellation will be emailed by 7.30pm the previous evening to those whose email address is known. Please send us your email address if you plan to attend and are not a regular attendee for whom we already have an email address. If in doubt phone or email (tweedbirds@bigpond.com) Convenor Linda Brannian on 0409 833 888 or Anne Jones: jones.oz@gmail.com  02 6629 1475.

For all outings, as well as your binoculars, bring food (at least morning tea and, depending on the day’s event, lunch), plenty to drink, sunscreen, hat, and wear sturdy shoes suitable for the bush. Often insect repellent is useful. Whenever possible, please contact the organisers beforehand to let them know you might be coming, and please notify them of any medical issues you might have that could have an effect on you during the course of the outing.

Brunswick Heads – old New Brighton Road – meet at Sports Field in New Brighton

Travelling on the Pacific Motorway/M1 from the South – take the Brunswick Valley Way exit to Ocean Shores, turn Right at 1st roundabout and go under Freeway, turn Left at 2nd roundabout and cross the Brunswick River then turn Left at the 3rd roundabout, into Rajah Road (steep hill).  Take the 2nd left into Warrambool Road (another steep hill), keep Right at small roundabout (2nd exit) onto Orana Road.  ** Follow Orana Road until you cross Marshalls Creek on Strand Ave and continue to T-junction at end of road.  Turn Left into The Esplanade Ave and follow this road to New Brighton where you will see, on your Right, a village shop on the corner of Ocean Ave.  Continue for a very short distance and you will see a Sports Field on the Right – immediately past the field, turn Right into Byron Street and park near the toilet block.  We can car-share for a short distance after this as parking space at the entrance to the Old Brighton Road walk is limited.

Travelling on the Pacific Motorway/M1 from the North, take the Brunswick Valley Way exit signed to Billinudgel and Ocean Shores, take the 1st exit at the roundabout then turn Right onto Brunswick Valley Way, signed for Billinudgel and Ocean Shores.  Continue on Brunswick Valley Way to a roundabout – turn Left into Orana Road.  Follow Orana Road to a small roundabout and turn Left to continue on Orana Road – follow directions from ** above

Byron Wetlands survey

Take the Byron Bay exit from the Pacific Motorway.  Follow Ewingsdale Road, crossing a small roundabout by the Sports Centre, until you come to the BP service station on the left.  Turn Left here into Bayshore Drive and follow that road for about 750 m (going over a roundabout and past retail/industrial units).  The turn-off to the Wetlands will be on the left (an un-named road) soon after seeing a small IGA shopping Centre on the right.  Follow the road to the Wetlands/Integrated Waste Water Management Reserve and wait at the gate if it is closed.  If the gate is open, drive in, turn left and drive down the track to the parking area.  Scopes are useful here.

Sunday 18 October 2015, 7.30 am (Note this is 3rd Sunday in Feb)

Vallances Road Survey

Vallances Road is a turning off Coolamon Scenic Drive, just north of Mullumbimby.  Coolamon Scenic Drive can be accessed from Billinudgel by turning south (take Brunswick Valley Way, not the Freeway) then turning Left onto Vallances Road at a tight bend, or from Mullumbimby by driving through the town on Murwillumbah Road and turning Right onto Coolamon Scenic Drive.  Vallances Road. is on the RHS on a tight/blind bend, so turn with care, drive to the end of the sealed road and meet at the Sewage Treatment Works gate before driving into the site.  If you are late, come through 2 gates to parking area. N.B.  Byron Council requests that all gates are to be left as found.

Note: there are no public toilets available; scopes may be useful for the lagoon area if mangrove growth has not obscured the view. Mosquitoes can be a problem here.

Sunday 8 November 2015, 7:30 am

Rocky Creek Dam

From the north-eastern side of Clunes, on the Bangalow / Lismore Road, turn into James Gibson Road and continue to the intersection with Corndale Road.  Turn Right onto Corndale Road and follow the road to Corndale where the road forks slightly, go Left into Dorroughby Road and follow to T junction then turn Left onto Dunoon Road.  Follow this road until you see Rocky Creek Dam Road on your Right and drive as far as a cattle grid which you cross to drive into a parking and picnic area.  There are several alternative routes that can be taken, many of which are signposted to the Dam (one is through Dunoon), and a local road map is recommended.

Sunday 13 December 2015, 7:30 am

Ballina – Flat Rock, Lake Chickiba and Meldrum Park

Take the Ross Lane exit from the Pacific Highway (signed to Lennox Head).  Turn Left at roundabout and take Ross Lane to its intersection with Byron Bay /Lennox head, Ballina road.  Turn Right and travel on the Coast Road for Ballina through/past Lennox Head and Skennars Head.  Flat Rock is signposted to the Left.  Alternatively, Flat Rock can be accessed from Ballina via Angels Beach Drive, when it will be on the Right.  Go to the parking area at the end of the road.  High Tide will be at 10.20 am.  Scopes are useful at these sites.

Our last stop will be Meldrum Park by the river at the junction of Norton and Fox streets for a BYO/bring a plate to share, picnic Christmas lunch.
